Sometimes you can find your debt situation too overwhelming. When this happens, it is good if you get down to basics. To do so, you can try some of these solutions for better debt handling.
BASICS – Try to make the insurance deductibles for your homeowners, renters and vehicles policies lower where it is appropriate. This will help you save a little money. Don’t take risks through bouncing checks for example; instead try to get covered through an overdraft protection, then, pay about the same amount as what it would cost for one bounced check to cover your account for an entire year. You can also ask your banker about account service packages. Many banks can offer you some free savings and checking accounts with free overdraft protection and checks, free online bill paying and more. When you go shopping, always check your receipts, even for groceries. Very often, items get registered at the cash desk at incorrect prices. Sometimes the store’s policy will allows for no error, which means that you can get the items bought for free if it wrings up wrong at the cash desk. So always carry a handheld calculator or pencil with small notepad with you, in order to match up your charges.
REACH OUT- If you are in medical debt, one of the first thing healthcare offices try to do is get you to refinance your home, or charge the bills, etc. STOP! And make sure you check with your legal advisor before you take such a big step, because, there are often other steps you will need to take first. For example, you will need to inform the billing parties and let them know that you need to apply for financial help. Many will give you forms to fill in, and although they may be quite long, remember that they are for free money to help you pay your bills. So reach out, take forms and fill them all in. For the remaining balances, you can set up an arrangement for minimum monthly payments, even if it is just for $10 a month for several years. Note that healthcare bills and credit card debt are not the same and therefore don’t need to be reported to the credit bureau in the exact same way.
Another idea is to gather some recent merchandise you may own and return it for a refund. Most mail order companies, along with the credit card company, will generally allow you about 30 days to examine your purchase. Return any you can for some refunds. If your purchase has been purchased over a month ago and you don’t want it, you can get on a letter writing campaign. Mention the place of purchase and copy the manufacturer, the distributor, the Better Business Bureau and your state Attorney General’s Office. Mention the reasons why the product is not to your satisfaction and that you want a refund. This initiative can often be quite well rewarded.
So before your debts get out of control, just try to get back to basics. Apply a few of these debt handling solutions and get the full potential out of what you have.
