When you analyse your monthly household costs each month, did you notice an increase compared to earlier months? It could be just ten or a hundred dollars but it is definitely more than it used to be.

If you leave it unchecked, that little bit of extra money paid each month could turn into a considerable amount. Below are five quick and easy tips that you can use and adapt to your daily lifestyle to help diminish your general household costs.

1. Cut your toothpaste tube into half. When you think your toothpaste tube is empty, just cut it in-half with some scissors. There will always be some more toothpaste left there that can last you for a couple of days even if you have a large family. For those of you living alone or with your spouse only, the extra toothpaste in a tube can usually last you up to five days or even more.

2. Don’t throw away your old bars of soap yet. Washing your hands with your bar of soap every day, you will see it get smaller and smaller until it is too small to use. As an alternative to throwing it away, you can simply stick the old bar of soap onto the new one. To do that, just make sure both bars are wet when you stick them together.

3. Install a water saving kit in your toilet cistern. When you flush the toilet, the amount of water that is used is usually more than required. Through installing a water saving kit in the cistern, the amount of water saved can amount to three gallons each month.

4. Use the fan instead of the air conditioner Whenever you can, use the fan instead of the air conditioner. Note that an air conditioner is a major contributor to your utilities bill. If you use the fan instead, you will be not only saving on your utility bill, but you will also build up a resistance to heat, which is more healthy as your chances of getting heat exhaustion or heat stroke during the hot summer season will be strongly reduced.

5. Recycle all your junk letters. Every month, you receive a few dozen letters from mailing companies into your mailbox. If some of these letters are printed on one side only, you can collect all these letters and combine them into an informal writing pad. Or, you can also use them to print out some draft documents. This will help you save money and a lot of trees.

Put these useful habits into use today and apply them to your daily life routine. You will breathe a sigh of relief when you notice your household expenses have gradually diminished little by little over the months.
