Investing in bonds is very secure, and the returns are usually quite good. Four basic types of bonds exist and are sold through the Government, corporations, state and local governments, as well as foreign governments.

The best thing regarding bonds is that you will get your initial investment returned. This will make bonds the perfect investment vehicle for those who are new to investing, or for those who have a risk tolerance which is low.

The United States Government tends to sell Treasury Bonds through the Treasury Department. You can therefore buy Treasury Bonds with maturity dates ranging from three months to thirty years.

Treasury bonds tend to include Treasury Notes (T-Notes), Treasury Bills (T-Bills), and Treasury Bonds. All Treasury bonds are usually backed by the United States Government, and tax will only be charged on the interest that the bonds get.

Corporate bonds are usually sold via public securities markets. A corporate bond is basically a company selling its debt. Corporate bonds usually have high interest rates, though they can be a bit risky. If the company goes belly-up, the bond will be worth nothing.

State and local Governments also tend to sell bonds. Unlike bonds issued by the federal government, these bonds usually have interest rates which are higher. This is due to the fact that State and Local Governments - unlike the federal government - can indeed go bankrupt.

You will fond that State and Local Government bonds are free from income taxes – even on the interest, and that State and local taxes can also be waived. Municipal Bonds which are tax-free are common State and Local Government Bonds.

Buying foreign bonds is actually quite difficult, and is often done as part of a mutual fund. It can often be quite dangerous to invest in foreign countries. The safest type of bond to purchase is one that has been issued by the US Government.

Though the interest might be a bit lower, there will be little or no risk involved. For better results, when a bond reaches a level of maturity, it is good to reinvest it into another bond.
